Why Equine Dentistry Is Different: Understanding the Horse's Hypsodont Teeth
One of the biggest misconceptions in equine dentistry is that a horse's teeth simply "keep growing." They don't. Horse teeth are designed very differently from human teeth, and understanding that difference is essential to understanding why equine dentistry requires a different approach.
Horses have hypsodont teeth
Horses have what is known as hypsodont dentition. The easiest way to picture this is to think of a mechanical pencil. A horse has a large amount of dental tissue available beneath the gumline. As the exposed tooth wears away from chewing, additional tooth is gradually erupted into the mouth. But there is a limit. The horse isn't continually producing new tooth throughout its life. Once that reserve of dental tissue has been used, there isn't another tooth waiting behind it. This is very different from animals such as rodents, whose incisors continue growing and must be continually worn down. For the horse, every millimeter of tooth matters.
Wear is part of the design
Horses naturally wear their teeth as they chew. The amount of wear varies with the individual horse, diet, environment, and other factors, but the important concept is that wear and eruption are happening continuously throughout life.
Ideally, the teeth wear in a relatively balanced way. When they don't, the consequences can accumulate over many years.
What happens when teeth don't wear evenly?
Imagine two opposing teeth. One is receiving significant contact and wearing appropriately. The opposing tooth isn't contacting properly, so it isn't wearing at the same rate.

Over time, the difference becomes larger. Eventually, you may see pronounced changes in the shape of the arcade - including long teeth, steps, waves, ramps, or other abnormalities.
A horse may look relatively balanced at five years old. By eight, the imbalance may be more obvious. By 15, the difference can be substantial. And by the time the horse reaches its later years, the consequences of years of uneven wear may be difficult to reverse.
This is why looking at a horse's mouth as a dynamic system is so important.
We're not just looking at what the teeth look like today. We're considering how those teeth have been functioning and how they are likely to change over the next several years.
The goal of occlusal equilibration

This is one of the concepts behind occlusal equilibration. The objective isn't simply to remove sharp points or make the teeth look more uniform. Instead, we're trying to improve the functional relationship between the opposing teeth so that they can participate in a more balanced pattern of wear. Think about the earlier example of one area having an excessive amount of tooth while another area has very little remaining dental reserve. If we can improve the way those teeth contact and wear, we're potentially helping preserve the remaining tooth structure for a longer period of the horse's life.
In simple terms: We're trying to help the teeth wear together rather than allowing the imbalance to become progressively worse.
This is different from simply "floating" teeth
This distinction is important. Floating has traditionally been used as a broad term for equine dental care. But equine dentistry can involve much more than removing sharp enamel points.
A functional dental examination considers the entire mouth:
How the upper and lower arcades relate to one another
Where the teeth are contacting
How the teeth are wearing
Where excessive wear is occurring
Where dental reserve is being lost
How the current occlusion may change over time
How the horse's age and stage of dental development affect the appropriate treatment
That requires more than simply looking for sharp points. It requires understanding why the mouth looks the way it does.
Why this matters as horses age
A horse has a finite amount of dental tissue to work with. That makes dental management a long-term process. A young horse and a geriatric horse may have very different dental needs, and an adjustment that seems reasonable based only on today's appearance may have consequences years down the road.
The goal should not be to make every mouth look the same. The goal is to understand the individual horse's anatomy, function, dental reserve, stage of life, and make appropriate decisions based on those factors.
That's what makes equine dentistry so fascinating. You're not just treating teeth. You're managing a system that is changing throughout the horse's entire life. And the better we understand that system, the better we can help preserve the dentition and support comfort and function as the horse ages.
